Tulle Skirt

I saw a skirt like this at Anthropologie for close to $200, and thought to myself..."There has got to be a pretty easy way to make something like that."

So I headed to the fabric section of my local 'Wally World' and decided to try my hand at this...about an hour later I had this fabulous tulle skirt and a great outfit for my Rehearsal Dinner (paired with some cowboy boots).

What you'll need:
1. 10 yards of tulle fabric
2. Spool of ribbon
3. Leggings of a similar color to your tulle

Total Cost: $17

Step 1. Fold fabric in half length-wise and begin rolling it
Step 2. Once rolled into a cylinder, cut into 5-6 inch sections
Step 3. Fold strips in half and tie strips to a piece of ribbon
Step 4. Tada! Tie skirt around your waist and you're ready to boot scoot

  2. Can the outcome also be achieved by using 6" tulle?

    2. How did you measure your waist with the ribbon so it didn't fall off of you?

  4. you said 5-6 inch sections that doesn't sound very long am I understanding correctly?

    1. Hi, Jennifer! You would have rolled the fabric length-wise, so cutting the fabric into 5 - 6 inch sections will make sections that are 5- 6 inches wide, but much longer in length - hope that makes sense!

    2. doesnt make sense to me too..i guess in step 3 it should say..then unravel the 5 or 6" pieces and tie to ribbon

    3. LadyPhade - or you could just use common sense....

    4. I would make it out of elastic and step in to it.

    1. Hi, Michelle! I just measured mine - I would say 60 inches - the skirt is about 30 inches in length, but the way I tied the tulle onto the ribbon was by folding the piece in half - hope that helps! :)

    2. Thank you so much!!! Super cute. Cant wait to make mine. 😍

    4. For those of you who are thinking of using 6 inch spools of tulle, think on this:
Each strand tied onto the ribbon is about 60 inches long. That gives you a skirt that's floor length, unless you are short like me then you can use 8 inches less. Anyway, I don't know how many strands you are going to need, I would guess 50 at least, depending on how full you want it to be.
      60inches is 1.5M
1.5M x 50 strips from the roll equals75meters. I don't know how many Meters you get for $, but you might want to check it out. They might not even have enough of the colors you want.
Tulle by the Meter is much less expensive and not as hard to work with as you think. Check out YouTube videos, then decide. Best wishes 💖💖😍

  7. Hi. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm a beginner DIY'er. Did you cut the bottom of the folded strips after you tied it to the ribbon?

    1. So sorry I never responded - abandoned the blog for a while, but am back at it now! I did not cut the bottom,

  8. How wide was the tulle yardage you used? I'm considering using spools instead and am trying to calculate how many I'd need. Thanks!

    1. So sorry I never responded - abandoned the blog for a while, but am back at it now! It was a pretty standard size fabric bolt so 43 inches or so.

    2. There’s many YouTube videos too that instruct to use about 4 or 5 spools of 6-in wide tulle OR buy 54” long tulle on the bolt you’ll cut into 6-in strips. You’ll need about 80 strips (about 13 yards)

  9. If i wanted it shorter what would you recomend the cut be

    1. So sorry I never responded - abandoned the blog for a while, but am back at it now! I would probably cut it once all pieces were tied to the ribbon.

    2. That way you can judge what length is best upon trying it on. The length of mine is just a product of the width of the fabric bolt - 43 inches.

    3. YouTube vids suggest about 25 inch Length for knee length.

  10. Hi I am just curious your waist size? I am making for my grandmother for fairy godmother and I am trying to calculate for a plus size older woman. Thank you :)

    1. So sorry I never responded - abandoned the blog for a while, but am back at it now! At the time my waist was 25ish inches - I've had a baby now, so that's definitely no longer the case 😉

    2. I’ll use one 54” long strip for my plus size waist leave enough extra to tie with.

  11. Or rather than give your waist size, can you give us an approximate number of ties per inch? As in (double the length we want) x (the 5 to 6" wide section) = 1 tie. Thanks.

    1. You’ll need about 80 (6-in wide) strips according to a YouTube video.

  17. Hi I'm still a little confused as to the way to roll and cut .do you have a video.I'm loving the skirt and I need that ASAP

  18. Hi there- gosh it's been so long since I made this, and unfortunately I don't have a video tutorial. If I remember correctly, you just take your tulle and lay it out completely flat then fold it in half length-wise (hot-dog, not hamburger lol). Then from the top of the fold just start rolling, then you start making your 5-6 inch cuts - the goal being to have long thin-ish strips of fabric to tie to the ribbon.

  19. I'm a size 16 how many yards of tulle should I buy

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmm maybe 15 yards? I'm not entirely sure. You could probably get away with 10 if you didn't bunch the pieces of tulle super tightly. My waist is 25 inches. Thanks for the question!

  20. I love this so much! I'm making a tutu for my halloween costume and I was looking everywhere on how to cut my tulle. This was very helpful! If I were to want it shorter to about my knees, how many inches should I cut it. 3...4?

    1. No honey, its the length that needs changing. I would use the same width, same number of pieces, BUT fold the 1 piece in half, cut on the fold into 2 pieces, then fold in half and then tie onto the ribbon.
Tutus are short and very very full. This will definitely accomplish that. I sure hope that you understood me. Best wishes 💖💖💖

  23. I'm just getting ready to try making a tutu, having purchased one on Etsy and seen how easy it looks. I know how I want to attach the strips of tulle to the ribbon tie (with a lark's head knot, which is the easiest thing in the world, but I had been thinking about how difficult it might be to do the cutting. So thanks for roll-and-cut idea.

  29. I have a question! I am attempting to make this for a school club project, and I was wondering which way you rolled and cut? Also, after you cut the pieces, do you unroll to tie on string, or is there a different process?
